When you`ve got an old server with CD-ROM and therefore cannot install the live edition, or you have another reason to install Gnome on Solaris 11 you should follow my very short guide;

Login onto the console and use the following commands:

sudo pkg install slim_install
sudo svcadm enable gdm

And if you want to run the deskstop:
startx

  1. Fantastic. Simple, to the point. Solaris might as well be in greek. Thanks much!

  2. Outstanding! Worked like a charm. Thank you for being one of the few who wrote a Solaris Desktop tutorial selflessly.

  3. Installed Solaris 11 via the text based installer.

    How to add the gnome package supposing downloaded the repository package and copy to /mnt for the iso file.
