Linux Kernel 2.6.29 installation guide for Ubuntu and Debian Linux

Aside

The Ubuntu kernel guys have released an โ€œofficialโ€ build of the 2.6.29 Linux Kernel which came out tonight. The .deb files work for both Ubuntu and Debian!  (and outdated, stable and test releases like Ubuntu 9.04 jaunty jackalope.

The included kernel files have been compiled using the generic ubuntu configuration but lack ubuntu specific drivers.  Note: nVIDIA ForceWare drivers are automaticly installed using DKMS (which is included in Ubuntu 8.10)

The files can be found at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.29/

Installation Guide

  1. Download http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.29/linux-headers-2.6.29-020629_2.6.29-020629_all.deb
  2. Download your kernel headers package;

    AMD64: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.29/linux-headers-2.6.29-020629-generic_2.6.29-020629_amd64.deb
  3. Download your kernel compile;

    I386:ย ย http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.29/linux-image-2.6.29-020629-generic_2.6.29-020629_i386.deb

  4. Install the files in the same order as mentions above! (doing step 1 and 2 the other way around isn`t possible!)

For lazy guys console freaks; dpkg -i *.deb

(Notice: the console have to be in the same directory as the downloads and no other .deb packages should be there โ€“ else they also get installed)
  5. Reboot and select the kernel from the bootloader menu

Howling Noise

I`ve finally found a solution to the howling noise my pc was making.
Audio demo: howling-noise (60dB gain from the original!)

Symptoms:

  • Both soundcards on both speakersets had the same โ€œnoiseโ€ (meaning it couldn`t be the soundcard, cabling system or speakers!)
  • Shutting down my sequencer stopped the noise
  • The noise was periodic
  • The soundcard`s controlpanel VUmeters lighten up so the problem was โ€œin the boxโ€.

The problem seemed to be in the box, next step was locating the problem.
It could be:

  1. Routing scheme problem
  2. Instrument
  3. Effect

It seemed to be an instrument with effects on it. The effects on the channel seemed to cause the problem.

Microformats implementation

Aside

apress-micoformats

I`ve recieved โ€œMicroformats: Empowering Your Markup for Web 2.0โ€ (ISBN 978-1-59059-814-6) a few days ago.
I`ve been busy implanting MicroFormats to this website.
It`s now possible to import hCard data whenever you`re trying to place a comment. The website is also MicroID enabled. I`ve also added APML support to the website.

In addition to the new features I`ve also fixed a caching bug (which was my fault actually).

And ofcourse the forum has been working for the last 2 weeks atleast.

I`m currently exploring DandyID to replace a bit of the current menu to a half-automatic identity manager.

While Santa is loading his rendeer with gifts, I`m working a few extra hours the next couple of weeks.

I wish all readers a merry christmas and a happy new year!

I will replace the snow on the site with fireworks just a couple of days before new years day.

I totally forgot to mention that Dreammaster Records has a x-mas theme since a few days.
